Soundbar speakers and wireless powered subwoofers are a match made in minimalist heaven. 1.1 speaker systems don't take up nearly the room space as "conventional" 5.1 or 7.1 speaker surround sound systems, but can still provide significant sonic improvement upon the less-than-spectacular sound quality of today's ultra-flat panel high definition televisions.

A surround sound bar is a single long, skinny speaker that can virtually "disappear" from view when either wall-mounted beneath or sitting under your television screen -- and "take over" the important task of reproducing 100% of the treble and midrange frequencies for 5 separate digital surround sound channels. A separate subwoofer speaker set up on the floor behind some furniture or near a corner handles all the low frequency bass sound effects. Keep in mind that even a "wireless" sub does need AC power.

A 1.1 speaker virtual surround sound system only asks that you worry about setting up 2 speakers, instead of proper placement and wiring of the 6 to 8 separate speakers that are required for "conventional" 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound speaker setups.

Sure, two speakers cannot possibly re-create the all-enveloping, immersive, three-dimensional audio experience you can get from six or eight speakers, but a 1.1 system sounds much better than most built-in TV speakers without taking over the entire entertainment room.
